Rask Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel

New Modern Kitchen Brings Style to Coon Rapids Home

Being 26 years old, John and Margie Rask's home was in need of some updates. The cabinets, appliances and bathroom fixtures were all starting to show their age. Plus, the Rask's had a desire for a more open floor plan for their kitchen and dining area. In their modified two-story home, a wall separated the kitchen from a formal living room, which they rarely used. It felt like a waste of space.

The Rask's read about the Home for Generations II program in a City newsletter. It was perfect timing as they were already contemplating a remodel of the space.

John Rask says, Reading about the incentive program helped us decide to do the remodel sooner rather than later.

The Rask's created a kitchen and dining area with an open floor plan and remodeled an upstairs bathroom. The kitchen features dark gray maple cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, a large center island, granite countertops, tile backsplash and laminate flooring. As part of the revamped space, they also created a breakfast bar overlooking the family room – an area that also doubles as a casual work station/computer area as needed.

The upstairs bathroom remodel includes a large shower with glass surround and double sinks in the vanity.

The Rask's recently showcased their remodel as part of the 2017 Coon Rapids Home Remodeling Tour, held May 21. Over 200 people toured their home, gaining ideas for their own home remodeling projects.

Margie Rask says, Our new space really brings people together. We are always inviting people over now and we have plenty of room to gather, eat and enjoy each other thanks to the many different seating areas that we have. We never had that before.

John Rask continues, "The process to take advantage of the program was very simple really. It was easy to follow. City staff were helpful in explaining the different steps of the process. If anyone else is looking to utilize this program, I highly recommend using the advice from the architectural consultation which is required for the program. Our consultation helped to bring about a lot of good ideas, hone in on a budget we could stick to… and the architect really has great insights for what can work for your home and for your investment."

The Rask's kitchen now features an open floor plan with center-island, larger dining area, work station/study area and all new appliances and finishes.
