Permit Fees

Building permit fees are based on project valuation which includes material and labor costs. View the Fee Schedule.

Fees are collected at the time the permit is issued. Acceptable methods of payment are: check, cash, Visa and MasterCard.

State Surcharge

The City is required to collect a state surcharge on each permit. To calculate the surcharge fee, visit the website for the Department of Labor and Industry.

Refund of Permit Fees

Reference Minnesota Rules 1300.0160, Subdivision 9

The City may refund fees for permits on which no work has been done and no inspections have been made. Requests for refunds must be in writing and signed by the permit holder. The Chief Building Official must approve each refund and the City shall retain the following:

City Retains: Timeframe:
$60 for requests made within 30 days, fee totals less than $60 are non refundable.
$60 or 20 percent of the permit whichever is greater
for requests made within 60 days
$60 or 40 percent of the permit whichever is greater
for requests made within 90 days
$60 or 60 percent of the permit whichever is greater
for requests made within 120 days
$60 or 80 percent of the permit whichever is greater
for requests made within 180 days

No refund is available after 180 days.

No refunds are available for:

  • Plan review fees
  • State surcharge fees
  • Re-inspection fees
